Lasagna, a famous Italian dish, is loved by people around the world for its complexity and rich in flavor. The recipe of lasagna is a wonderful combination of several finest ingredients that can create a harmony in diner’s mouth. There are many versions and innovations from the traditional lasagna recipes, and today, we would like to introduce a lasagna recipe that can please cheese lovers as well as everyone that has ever taken a bite of this dish!
Ingredients (prep will take about 25 minutes)
- 9 Lasagna Noodles
- ½ cup of Butter
- 1 Onion (chopped)
- 1 clove of Garlic (minced)
- ½ cup of All-purpose Flour
- 1 teaspoon of Salt
- 2 cups of Chicken Broth
- 1 ½ cup of Milk
- 4 cups of Mozzarella Cheese (shredded)
- 1 cup of Parmesan Cheese (grated)
- 1 teaspoon of Dried Basil
- 1 teaspoon of Dried Oregano
- ½ teaspoon of Ground Black Pepper
- 2 cups of Ricotta Cheese
- 2 cups of Chicken Meat (cubed and cooked)
- 2 (10 ounces) packages of Frozen Chopped Spinach (thawed and drained)
- 1 tablespoon of Fresh Parsley (chopped)
- ¼ cup of Parmesan Cheese (grated – for topping)
Cooking (cooking will take about 50 minutes)
Step 1 – preheat the oven and cook lasagna noodles: Preheat the oven up to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Take out a large pot and pour water up to 2/3 of the pot depth. Add little salt to the water and bring it to a boil. When the water is boiling, add 9 lasagna noodles and cook for about 8 to 10 minutes. When the lasagna is cooked, drain and rinse the noodles under cold water.
Step 2 – make the lasagna sauce: In a large saucepan, melt ½ cup of butter over medium heat. Then add one chopped onion and 1 minced clove of garlic and cook until the onion gets tender. You should stir constantly so the onion is not burned. After that, add 1 teaspoon of salt and ½ cup of all-purpose flour into the saucepan. Simmer the mixture until it is bubbly. Continue to add 2 cups of chicken broth and 1 ½ cups of milk, stir and bring the mixture to a boil. Constantly stir for about 1 minute. Then add 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese and ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese into the mixture. Season with 1 teaspoon of dried basil, 1 teaspoon dried oregano and ½ teaspoon of ground black pepper. Stir some time for all the ingredients to combine. Turn off the heat and set the sauce aside.
Step 3 – layer lasagna: You will need a 9×13 inch baking dish to resemble lasagna. Start with 1/3 of the sauce, spread it over the bottom of the baking dish. Then layer 3 lasagna noodles onto the sauce, sprinkle ricotta cheese and add cooked chicken on the top. Then layer put another 3 lasagna noodles on the chicken layer, top with 1/3 portion of sauce. Then layer the spinach over, continue with remaining 2 cups of mozzarella cheese and ½ cup of Parmesan cheese. The final layer will start with remaining lasagna noodles over the cheese layer, put the sauce on top, sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of parsley and ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese on the top.
Step 4 – bake the lasagna: When the lasagna is well arranged, put the baking dish in the preheated oven for about 35 to 40 minutes. The top layer will turn golden brown with crispy skin.
You can cover the baking dish with aluminum foil to keep the lasagna moist and cooked evenly. The foil also prevents any spill-out during the baking so that you can easily clean the oven later.
The recipe can serve up to 12 portions so you can make it for family gathering or union. The dish can be served with some fresh salad, along with crispy bread.
